5 Simple Ways to Care for and Clean Wovenpanel™

5 Simple Ways to Care for and Clean Wovenpanel™

Archant’s exclusive product, Wovenpanel™ is a unique decorative surface that’s been widely embraced by those in the design community.

We’ve seen it incorporated into award-winning projects, and a variety of other featured designs.

In previous articles, we’ve covered important topics such as the various ways to use Wovenpanel™ and how much it costs.

Yet in this piece, we want to discuss how to clean and maintain its beautiful appearance.

1) What is Wovenpanel™ Made From?

To understand how to best care for Wovenpanel™, it’s helpful to know what it’s made from. At the most basic level, it’s a stainless-steel mesh.

Technically speaking it’s made from T304 and T316L stainless steel alloys, both of which provide an exceptional quality of finish to the wire.

Our customers around New Zealand report that maintaining the original appearance of Wovenpanel™ requires very little effort. Architects and designers love it for its corrosion resistance and high-end appeal.

To help keep it looking great for years to come, there are some specific tips we can offer.

2) Cleaning Wovenpanel™ After Installation

When the fabrication and installation of your Wovenpanel™ are completed, it’s recommended that you complete a basic inspection of the surface. Remove any residue with a soft, damp cloth. This includes any contaminates and/or dirt that may have accumulated during its handling.

3) Ongoing Care and Maintenance of Wovenpanel™

We’ve already noted how Wovenpanel™ can add a long-lasting and unique architectural design element to any project. Yet, the level of corrosion resistance you experience with stainless steel can falter over time.

The difference is all about how you care for the material. This is true with most stainless-steel products such as kitchen sinks. Similarly, Wovenpanel™ will look and perform its best when simple and regular care is performed.

The best approach is to clean the mesh when visible dust or dirt is present. This will help to largely reduce any contaminants which can degrade the stainless steel. A clean surface is better able to withstand corrosion while also keeping the product looking its best.

For this kind of light cleaning, remove any surface build-up with either a dry or damp soft cloth. Be sure to dry the mesh completely when done.

4) How to Complete a Deep Cleaning of Wovenpanel™

The environmental conditions in your space will generally determine how frequently a deep clean is required.

  • For thorough cleaning, a recommended process is to rinse the mesh with deionized/distilled water. This type of water is preferable as it won’t leave hard water marks behind. The goal here is to remove any loose contaminants.

  • Next, you’ll want to wash the mesh with a basic cleaning solution. You can prepare this at home with the following ingredients: Deionized/distilled water, and a mild, environmentally safe multi-purpose cleaner with a detergent or 5% ammonia. A soft cloth should be all that’s needed.

  • In rare instances, or when stubborn stains are present, it may be necessary to use a soft nylon brush. Complete the process by rinsing with clean cold water and drying completely.

Please note: Avoid using any abrasive scouring pads, or steel wool on Wovenpanel™. These products can cause cross-contamination of the unalloyed free iron. This can result in rust stains that are difficult to remove from wire mesh.

5) Wovenpanel™ is Best Used Indoors

Considering that the base alloy of Wovenpanel™ is bare steel, it is not recommended for exterior use. Even with the decorative plated finish, it won’t adequately cover the intersecting wire on wire areas.

Exposure to the outdoor elements would cause it to rust and break down. This is especially true in areas near the sea as saltwater would only expedite corrosion.
